Before:

1957 Ranch-style house in north Austin. Was dark and dim in the middle of the house. We decided to breathe new life into this old house. Keeping the original materials and structure that made sense, but letting performance (not fashion) drive the renovation.

After:

We popped up the roof and put in a large, north-facing clerestory window. Opened up the load-bearing wall with timber columns and a beam. So the middle of the house went from being dark/dim to brightly daylit. But not too bright! No direct sun, no glare, and no heat gain. Daylighting is the controlled distribution of natural light in a space. Not too much and not too little. Getting it just right.
